Four Essays On Love

Brother Madsen treats the subject of love from several divergent angles. He discusses the concept from Joseph Smith’s teachings and his exemplary illustrations; he offers insight on Christ-centered romantic love; he explores the need for communion within marriage and family; and he contemplates the relationship between the wrenching circumstances in life and the overarching outpour of godly love.

Joseph Smith Among the Prophets

Originally a transcribed lecture offered as a tract on the grounds of the Joseph Smith Memorial when Brother Madsen was president of the New England Mission. Later published in a more professional style by Deseret Book in 1965.

Truman points out ten definitions of a prophet according to spokespeople from the Judeo-Christian tradition. He shows that Joseph Smith qualifies under every definition in explicit ways. (He refers to this brochure in the beginning of his first set of Joseph Smith tapes.) Out of print

How to Be Loved and Beloved

This was originally published in connection with a youth conference in the New England Mission. It is relatively short and suggests ways in which celestial love differs from and is superior to the kind of love promulgated in the popular media. It is also one of the essays in Four Essays on Love.

The Better Music

Published in the Improvement Era, vol. 66, June 1963, 554-55.
Based on an episode in a Homeric legend, the short article points out that the compelling temptations of modern-day sirens can be drowned out and superseded by an acceptance of the beauties in the gospel of Jesus Christ, which really offer us "the better music."

Are Christians Mormon?

Brother Madsen gave several versions of this, but one he gave as a forum in the Marriott Center at BYU in 1974 was published in BYU Studies, vol. 15, no. 1, 73-94. He points out that in recent decades spokespeople from various strands of Christianity have been suggesting doctrines that were almost unique to Joseph Smith when he first taught them.
